“I’m from Cape Verde, São Vicente. My father was from a wealthy family and my mother was<br />
the cook’s daughter. When I was born, my mother was sent away, and I stayed with my<br />
grandmother until she passed away. I realised that if I didn’t study, I would stagnate. I would<br />
probably end up working in some shop… When I was 17, I came to study Romanic Philology in<br />
Lisbon. I went hungry quite often, as my grant didn’t stretch very far. Halfway through the<br />
course, I started teaching literacy at the Cape Verdean Association. At that time, there were<br />
already lots of workers here, who had been invited by Marcello Caetano to work on construction<br />
projects such as the metro. That’s when the communities emerged in Pedreira dos Húngaros,<br />
Damaia… To this day, I’m chair of the board of the Cape Verdean Association. In the 1980s, the<br />
Portuguese began to notice that they had immigrants here and a few parties woke up to that. The<br />
main person that helped me make it to parliament was José Leitão, who drew up a protocol with<br />
various immigrants’ associations, to discuss the first extraordinary legalisation, in 1992. In 1995,<br />
Gueterres invited me to handle immigration issues in the PS’s parliamentary group. Today, I’m<br />
first secretary of the committee of the Assembly of the Republic and I sit next to Jaime Gama.<br />
The nationality law, approved last year, was a big victory. I’m proud to have been part of it. We<br />
had to tread very carefully, but there wasn’t a single vote against it. Cape Verdeans are all viewed<br />
as the rabble from the Cova da Moura ghetto, but lots of them have actually integrated very well,<br />
at Gulbenkian or in good companies. I’ve never felt discriminated against, because I try to blend<br />
in; I can pass for Portuguese. But I’ve seen instances of discrimination, even in my family, with<br />
my darker sisters. My husband is Portuguese and always thinks he knows more about Cape Verde<br />
than I do. My daughter sings the traditional mornas from Cape Verde and speaks Creole; my son<br />
