Dans une commune de la banlieue liégeoise, Saint-Nicolas, l'enjeu de ces élections était double: le cartel d'opposition Ensemble (MR, CDH et Mouvement Socialiste) allait-il détrôner le PS, et l'échevin PS [[Abdelkarim Benmouna|BENMOUNA]] allait-il dépasser en voix de préférences le bourgmestre PS AVRIL ? Ce dernier n'avait en tout cas pas ménagé les efforts pour saper la campagne de ses adversaires, et pour interdire à ses colistiers de mener campagne, imposant le monopole de ses propres affiches. Le candidat [[Birol Cokgezen|COKGEZEN]] avait quant à lui failli être écarté de la liste pour cause de trop grande proximité avec le candidat BENMOUNA et pour avoir parlé avec... un candidat de l'opposition !<br />

En 2003, Patrick AVRIL avait pourtant répondu dans une interview: "l’extrême-droite n’a pas d’élu à Saint-Nicolas! Par contre, la population d’origine immigrée est bien intégrée, même politiquement. Notre Echevine des affaires sociales, décédée voici peu, était d’origine ukrainienne. Il faut préciser ici qu'Abdelkarim BENMOUNA est certes échevin, mais également médecin personnel du "Johnny Halliday belge", [https://web.archive.org/web/20081015134652/http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0dguKikz7Ec grande vedette internationale sur Youtube], le ministre des finances régional wallon Michel DAERDEN (PS), et que Birol COKGEZEN n'est autre que... le chauffeur de ce dernier ! A eux deux, ils doivent partager un nombre important de secrets d'Etat comme par exemple le taux "normal" d'alcoolémie du Grand Argentier socialiste wallon...<br />

Le bourgmestre Patrick AVRIL quant à lui semble être du même calibre que les élus PS carolos qui ont fait des séjours plus ou moins prolongés en prison ces derniers mois: travaux dans sa maison personnelle par des ouvriers de sa société de logements sociaux, utilisation de personnel communal pour sa campagne électorale en 2004 etc. Bref, le genre de personnage dont la nomination comme bourgmestre risque d'être problématique, vu le nombre d'actions judiciaires en cours contre lui...<br />

En fin de compte, les trois premiers de la liste PS en voix de préférences sont... Patrick AVRIL (3.333 voix), Abdelkarim BENMOUNA (2.218 voix) et... Birol COKGEZEN (681 voix), remonté de la 26ème place sur la liste à la troisième ! Et le PS a obtenu 19 sièges sur 27, pas de scénario à la Pepinster ou à la Chapelle-lez-Herlaimont donc, où des majorités PS quasi-séculaires ont été renversées par une opposition unie.<br />
