Mohamed Ali Al-Hameri, gynécologue né au Yémen, est le premier maire polonais d'origine non-européenne[1].
Il est venu en Pologne en 1983 pour y étudier à la Faculté de médecine de Bialystok, il a d'abord travaillé dans un hôpital puis a ouvert un cabinet privé en 2001.
En mars 2007, il a été élu sołtys (Schultheiß, chef de village) du village de Zawistowszczyzna (près de la frontière avec la Biélorussie, entre la ville polonaise de Bialystok et la ville biélorusse de Hrodna).
